A head fills the whole of this small square canvas, crowned with sweeping strokes of laurel and framed by curls that fall like drapery.
The features are reduced to a few decisive lines: almond eyes, a straight nose, a closed mouth.
Against the deep taupe ground, the white paint seems carved rather than painted, and the gaze holds steady.
